"I think I met your mother, is she a little, old, wobbly, white lady?"

When considering my relationship with my recumbent tricycle (Froggy), it's important to understand that walking for me has always been and always will be a true challenge. I am very aware of how different it is. It's slow, not at all smooth, and accident prone. I get it that I am very blessed to be ambulatory, but it can be challenging and tedious.
Next point: I live on a hill. Now imagine what it's like, in terms of pure JOY, to take Froggy out in the morning and roll down Cedar Lane toward the train station. It's still slow but to me it's like flying. It's about being released from my bonds. I get to go places on Froggy that I can't reach on foot. It's a piece of Heaven. We have discussed many changes, with High School coming to an end. Have tricycle, will travel, but the tricycle (and room to play) is essential. I love to write so much that it was a real puzzle this winter when my rehab doctor suggested that the solution to the swelling in my wrists was to stop typing. Since then I have experimented with a whole range of solutions....
All are slower than typing with a keyboard, which is why I still sometimes type anyway. The real solution appears to be a mix of strategies, and a willingness to know when to back off. My name is Robin Brown. I am the Information Literacy Librarian at Borough of Manhattan Community College. This is a picture of my "magic carpet." When I'm at work it's probably parked at the commuter rail station about a mile from my house. I get to ride three wheels because my right leg doesn't like to show up for work. I flunked riding two wheels. I feel very strongly that there is an edge to my experiences that I don't see written about anywhere. I call it Adaptive Librarianship. I need to address what it's like to have a full time professional career, a family, an extended commute, and to be doing it all as a person with disabilities. In some ways my trike is a fantastic emblem, because it says that I am still here, still in the game, but with a difference. |
